Empirical Bias Bandwidth Choice for Local Polynomial Matching Estimators

چکیده

This paper addresses the choice of an optimal smoothing parameter for local polynomial matching. A version of Empirical Bias Bandwidth Selection (EBBS) proposed by Ruppert (1997) is applied to account for the MSE computation of the matching estimator. Thereby, an estimator for the large sample variance of the local polynomial matching estimator is also provided. A Monte Carlo study indicates better small sample performance of nonparametric matching estimators when the bandwidth choice is based on EBBS in comparison to cross-validation. Furthermore, the method is applied to estimate the treatment effect on the treated (TT) of the National Supported Work (NSW) Demonstration. JEL classification: C14, C21, C31

Robust Nonparametric Bias-Corrected Inference in the Regression Discontinuity Design∗

In the regression discontinuity design units are assigned treatment based on whether their value of an observed covariate exceeds a known cutoff. Local polynomial estimators are now routinely employed to construct confidence intervals for treatment effects in this design. The performance of these confidence intervals in applications, however, may be seriously hampered by their sensitivity to th...

Asymptotic Properties of Back tting Estimators

When additive models with more than two covariates are tted with the backktting algorithm proposed by Buja et al. 2], the lack of explicit expressions for the estimators makes study of their theoretical properties cumbersome. Recursion provides a convenient way to extend existing theoretical results for bivariate additive models to models of arbitrary dimension. In the case of local polynomial ...

nprobust: Nonparametric Kernel-Based Estimation and Robust Bias-Corrected Inference∗

Nonparametric kernel density and local polynomial regression estimators are very popular in Statistics, Economics, and many other disciplines. They are routinely employed in applied work, either as part of the main empirical analysis or as a preliminary ingredient entering some other estimation or inference procedure. This article describes the main methodological and numerical features of the ...

Analysis of Lidar Measurements Using Nonparametric Kernel Regression Methods

The LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) technique is an eecient tool for remote monitoring of the distribution of a number of atmospheric species. We study measurements of SO 2 emitted from the Italian vulcano Etna. In this study we focus on the treatment of data and on the procedure to evaluate range resolved concentrations. In order to make an in-depth analysis we prepared the lidar system to...

Adaptive Estimation of the Regression Discontinuity Model

In order to reduce the …nite sample bias and improve the rate of convergence, local polynomial estimators have been introduced into the econometric literature to estimate the regression discontinuity model. In this paper, we show that, when the degree of smoothness is known, the local polynomial estimator achieves the optimal rate of convergence within the Hölder smoothness class. However, when...
